The River Maiden: A Walk Between Worlds
A Dartmoor Fairy Encounter
In this two‑part journey on The Fairy Whispering Podcast, I explore one of the most striking fairy encounters I’ve ever recorded — Ian’s experience of seeing a mysterious young girl on a hot summer’s day beside a Dartmoor river. Her clothing, black‑and‑white and strangely immaculate, seemed old‑fashioned yet vivid, as though she had stepped out of another time entirely. Ian’s sighting left him wondering whether he had glimpsed a fairy maiden crossing through an unseen doorway into our world.
Part One: The Bridge, the Maiden, and the Thin Places
In the first episode, Ian and I talk about the moment that changed his understanding of the unseen. While crossing an old bridge, he noticed the girl below — out of place, out of time, and yet somehow right within the landscape. Our conversation explores:

A Note on Phantom Cottages & Time‑Slips
This episode pairs beautifully with my YouTube talk on phantom cottages — places that appear and disappear, or seem to belong to another era entirely. In that talk, I share accounts of people who have met individuals who feel out of time, as though they have stepped from another century. Part Two: Solstice, Thresholds, and the Haunted Lane
In Part Two, I return to Dartmoor to meet Ian on the Summer Solstice; a time when enchantment is said to be at its height. We walk together through meadows alive with butterflies, wildflowers, and birdsong, the midsummer light turning the landscape into a living presence.
As we approached the bridge, I was convinced that I had seen a momentary flash of someone dressed in green on the bridge who swiftly disappeared. It may have been the shifting dappled sunlight playing tricks on my perception?!
Standing at the bridge where his encounter occurred, Ian shares more about the girl he saw: her Victorian‑style clothing, her stillness, her uncanny sense of belonging. We reflect on:

Ian performs a gifting ritual to connect with the maiden whilst we are at the bridge. Something I noticed approaching the bridge and whilst at the bridge was my voice-recorder batteries draining and then seemingly re-energising!
Our walk continues to a haunted lane, known for its spectral wind, and finally to the Fairy Tree, where folklore, memory, and mystery gather close.
A Landscape That Remembers
Across both episodes, Dartmoor becomes more than a backdrop. It is a participant — a place where stories linger, where encounters imprint themselves, and where the boundary between worlds feels unusually thin. Ian’s experience invites us to consider that a simple walk beside a river may reveal far more than expected.
